PDF-COPS is a special version of COPS-Crypto for safe distribution of encrypted PDF files without the need for modifications to the standard Acrobat Reader (the browser used to view PDF files). After applying the protection, the encryption is totally transparent to the end-user. The PDF encryption is accomplished using a standard software utility. The Acrobat Reader is monitored while running and the PDF files are decrypted in memory on the fly. This advanced technique has been implemented using the advanced 32-bit operating system interface, and it works with modern 32-bit browsers running on 32-bit platforms (Win 95/98, Win 2000, NT 4.0 and WinXP). The data files are encrypted using a powerful, proprietary algorithm and locked to the CD-ROM using the well-known CD-COPS technology. Any reputable CD factory can produce the CD-ROMs without the use of special equipment. The finished CD-ROMs cannot be copied, and the databases themselves cannot be pirated. It is possible to open certain groups of documents only for a specified period of time through the use of access codes. New groups can be enabled using additional codes later on. If the author disables the "Copy/Paste" and "Save as..." operations, while creating the PDF file, the end-user won't be able to copy or save the content of a PDF file, when the PDF-COPS protected file has been decrypted in memory and has been loaded on Acrobat Reader. |
